Taxonomic Naming

This species, the relict leopard frog, has the scientific name Lithobates onca (Cope, 1875).

Vocalizations

Its vocalizations are described as a "low rumbling 'snore'".

Size

Adult individuals reach a length between 4.4 and 8.4 cm (1.7 to 3.3 inches).

Body Appearance

They have a narrow, brown body marked with darker spots, and a beige-colored streak running along the upper lip.

Activity Pattern

Relict leopard frogs are primarily nocturnal.

Historical Distribution

Historically, this species ranged along the Colorado River in extreme northwestern Arizona, adjacent Nevada, and southwestern Utah.

Current Distribution

Today, as its common name suggests, the species' current range is restricted to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Nevada. It is considered extirpated from Arizona and Utah.

Natural Habitat

Its natural habitat consists of freshwater springs and their outlets.
