The Italian newt, scientifically named Lissotriton italicus (Peracca, 1898), is a species of salamander belonging to the family Salamandridae that is found exclusively in Italy.

Habitat Types

This species occurs in a range of habitat types, including temperate forests, temperate shrubland, Mediterranean-type shrubby vegetation, freshwater lakes, intermittent freshwater lakes, freshwater marshes, intermittent freshwater marshes, arable land, pastureland, rural gardens, water storage areas, ponds, and canals and ditches.

Threats

It is currently threatened by habitat loss, natural land conversion, and invasive species.

Taxonomic History

This species was formerly classified as Triturus italicus, and was moved to the genus Lissotriton after the genus Triturus was split.
