About Limnodea arkansana (Nutt.) L.H.Dewey
Limnodea, commonly called Ozark grass, is a genus of North American plants in the grass family. Its originally described type species was Greenia arkansana Nutt., and the only known species in this genus is the annual bunchgrass Limnodea arkansana (Nutt.) L.H.Dewey.
Limnodea arkansana is native to the Mexican states of Coahuila and Tamaulipas in northeastern Mexico, as well as the South-Central, Midwestern, and Southeastern United States. Within the United States, it occurs in Arkansas (including the Ozarks), Oklahoma, East Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, and the Florida Panhandle. It grows in dry, typically sandy soils across habitats including prairies, open woodlands, river banks, and disturbed areas. Along the Gulf Coast, it can also be found on upper shell-accumulating beaches, maritime shell mounds, and middens.
