About Leucadendron levisanus (L.) P.J.Bergius
Leucadendron levisanus, commonly called the Cape flats conebush, is a flowering shrub in the genus Leucadendron that is part of the fynbos vegetation. This species is native to the Western Cape of South Africa, where it grows on the Cape Flats, ranging from Vishoek to Eerste River and Mamre. The shrub reaches a height of 2 meters (6 feet 7 inches) and produces flowers in October. Mature plants are killed by fire, but their seeds survive wildfires. Seeds are stored in a cone on female plants, and are released after the plant is killed by fire, after which they fall to the ground and may be dispersed by wind. The species is unisexual, with separate individual male and female plants. Pollination is carried out by insects. It grows primarily in sandy soil at elevations between 0 and 100 meters (0 to 328 feet) above sea level.
