Adult Size

Adults of Leiocephalus carinatus can reach a snout-to-vent length (SVL) of 10.5 cm (4.1 in), and a total length including the tail of 26 cm (10 in).

Dorsal Scale Features

This species has keeled, pointed dorsal scales.

Distinguishing Trait

It resembles lizards from the genus Sceloporus, but its tail is typically curled upward, particularly when the lizard is positioned horizontally on rocks or the ground.

Native Range

It is native to the Bahama Islands, the Cayman Islands, and Cuba.

Florida Introduction

It was intentionally introduced to Palm Beach, Florida in the 1940s to control sugar cane pests, and it now also occurs in a few other areas of the state.

Honduras Introduced Population

An additional introduced population lives on the Swan Islands, Honduras.
