Lagothrix lagothricha, the common woolly monkey, is a large tree-dwelling primate compared to most other arboreal primates.

Body and Tail Length

Its head-body length ranges from 40 to 60 centimetres (1.3 to 2.0 ft), its tail measures 55 to 75 centimetres (22 to 30 in), and its body weight falls between 5.5 and 10.8 kilograms (12 to 24 lb).

Contrary to its common name, its fur can be grey, black, or brown, and it is darker in colour on the head and underparts.

Facial Characteristics

The face is hairless and typically black.

Sexual Dimorphism

Most males are larger than females, and also have larger canine teeth.

Activity Pattern

Common woolly monkeys are diurnal.

General Distribution Range

This species occurs in the upper Amazon basin of South America.

Range Extent

Its range extends from the Rio Tapajos in Brazil to eastern Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia, with scattered populations reaching as far north as Venezuela.

Extirpation Status in Bolivia

It was historically found in Bolivia, but is likely extirpated there due to hunting.

Primary Habitat Use

Common woolly monkeys inhabit rainforests, and are most often found in the canopy of the tallest rainforest trees, though they can also occur in the shrub layer.

Seasonal Habitat Movement

During certain seasons, groups of common woolly monkeys frequently enter flooded forests, attracted by the higher concentration of berries found there.
