Taxonomy and Naming
Incilius luetkenii, formerly classified as Bufo luetkenii and commonly called the yellow toad, is a toad species belonging to the family Bufonidae.
Pacific Slope Distribution
Its range in Mesoamerica covers the Pacific slope from central Costa Rica to the extreme southern part of Chiapas, Mexico, including the intervening countries of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
Additional Distribution Areas
It is also found in dry interior valleys of Guatemala and Honduras, and the San Juan River drainage in Costa Rica on the Atlantic slope.
Lowland Dry Forest Habitat
This toad occurs in open areas, including disturbed pasturelands within lowland dry forests.
Moist Forest Habitat
To a lesser degree, it can also be found in lowland moist forests and premontane moist forests.
Breeding Habitat
It breeds in temporary pools.
Conservation Status
It is a common species that does not face major threats.
Mating Behavior
This species is also known to use vocal behaviors to call for mates, and this activity can sometimes lead to aggression between male individuals.
