Appearance Overview
Bufo eichwaldi is a large toad that greatly resembles Bufo verrucosissimus in overall appearance. Its body is a uniform dull brownish grey, with large round tubercles covering its back and smaller tubercles on its belly.
Distinguishing Features
It can be distinguished from B. verrucosissimus by its different body proportions, an abrupt, unrounded snout, and black markings on the parotoid gland where the gland contacts the tympanum.
Sexual Dimorphism
Males of this species have dark spots on an otherwise pale belly, and are noticeably smaller than females.
Geographical Range
Bufo eichwaldi is thought to range in southeastern Azerbaijan and northern Iran, specifically in the Talysh and Elburz Mountains. It is also found in Iran’s Mazandaran and Gilan provinces, near the Caspian Sea.
Elevation Range
This toad occurs at elevations up to approximately 1,200 metres (3,900 ft) above sea level.
Habitat Preferences
Its primary habitat is broad-leaved forest, though it can occasionally be found in lowland swamps and gardens.
