About Iberis saxatilis L.
Iberis saxatilis L. is a low-growing, spreading perennial plant. Its foliage can be evergreen or semi-evergreen, depending on how harsh its winter environment is. It produces many snowflake-shaped white flowers; as the flowers age, their petals develop a pink or purple tinge. This plant can spread by forming adventitious roots when its stems come into contact with soil. The species' natural native range includes Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, the Balkan Peninsula, the Crimean Peninsula, and Morocco. A new subspecies, Iberis saxatilis subsp. magnesiana, was first identified in Turkey in 2017. Commonly called rock candytuft, this plant is usually cultivated in gardens that mimic the rocky alpine conditions of its natural habitat. It grows and flowers best in full sun with well-drained soil, though it can also tolerate partial shade. Crown rot frequently develops in this plant when grown in poorly drained soil.
