Fur and Markings
The agile gibbon (scientific name Hylobates agilis F.Cuvier, 1821) has fur that ranges in color from black to red-brown. It has a white brow, and males can be identified by their white or light-grey cheeks.
Sexual Dimorphism
Males are also slightly larger than females.
Weight
Agile gibbons weigh between 4 and 6 kg (8.8 to 13.2 lb), with an average weight of 5 kg (11 lb); individuals in captivity can reach a weight of 8 kg (18 lb).
Body Dimensions
Their head and body length measures 44–63.5 cm (17.3–25.0 in). Like all gibbon species, the agile gibbon does not have a tail.
Geographic Range
In terms of distribution and habitat, the agile gibbon occurs on Sumatra southeast of Lake Toba and the Singkil River, in a small area of the Malay Peninsula, and in southern Thailand near the Malaysian border.
Habitat Preferences
It is predominantly an arboreal species that lives in rain forests, and rarely descends to the ground.
