Taxonomy and Naming

Hydrophis coggeri, commonly called the slender-necked sea snake or Cogger's sea snake, is a species of venomous marine snake that belongs to the subfamily Hydrophiinae within the family Elapidae.

General Distribution Range

This species is native to marine waters around western Australia and the southern Pacific Ocean.

Specific Recorded Locations

Specifically, H. coggeri has been recorded in marine waters around Fiji, the Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia, and western Australia.

Type Locality

Its type locality is located in Fiji.

Habitat and Depth Range

The preferred natural habitats of H. coggeri are coral reefs and seagrass beds, and it can be found at depths up to 45 meters (148 feet).

Reproductive Mode

H. coggeri is viviparous, meaning it gives birth to live young.

Reproductive Observation

One recorded gravid female of this species was found to carry three embryos.
