About Hieracium amplexicaule L.
Hieracium amplexicaule L., commonly called sticky hawkweed, is a perennial chamaephyte, meaning its regenerative buds are positioned above ground. It usually grows as a low woody or succulent plant, reaching no more than 30 cm in total height. Its common name sticky hawkweed likely refers to the plant's glandular, adhesive surfaces. Its specific epithet amplexicaule means "stem-clasping" in Latin, which references one of this species' distinctive features: its stem-clasping leaves.
This species has been recorded growing in multiple European countries. It has been confirmed present in the area around Tongeren, Belgium, since at least 1867, and has also been documented in nearby areas close to Maastricht in the Netherlands.
Like other species in the genus Hieracium, Hieracium amplexicaule is a facultative apomict. This means it is capable of reproducing both sexually and asexually, and a single ovule from this species can undergo both sexual and asexual megagametogenesis.
