In the past, it was frequently grouped together with the dark-backed sibia as part of the species H. melanoleuca. Along with most other sibia species, it is sometimes classified in the separate genus Malacias.

This species occurs in China, Laos, and Vietnam.
Habitat
Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.
