About Helenium campestre Small

Helenium campestre Small is a perennial herb that can grow up to 100 cm, or 40 inches, tall. A single plant can produce up to 20 flower heads arranged in branching clusters. Each flower head is spherical or egg-shaped, and can sometimes hold as many as 700 disc florets. Each disc floret is yellow near its base, and purple or brown toward its tip. This species also produces 9 to 15 yellow ray florets per flower head. It grows in habitats including ditches, fields, and streambanks. This species has a very restricted native distribution, and is found only in the U.S. states of Arkansas and Louisiana. In Louisiana, it has been officially recorded in Bossier Parish and Webster Parish.
