About Hakea propinqua A.Cunn.

Hakea propinqua A.Cunn. is a bushy shrub that reaches 1 to 4 meters (3 to 10 feet) in height. It produces small, pale yellow or white flowers with an unpleasant scent, which grow in umbels along branchlets in leaf axils. The leaves of this species are thin and terete, measuring approximately 3 cm (1 inch) long and 1 mm (0.04 inches) wide, and end in a sharp tip about 1 mm (0.04 inches) long. Compared to the related Needlebush, its leaves are softer, and grow at a smaller angle to the stem. Its warty fruits are egg-shaped to elliptic, 3.5–4.5 cm (1–2 inches) long, 2.5–3 cm (about 1 inch) wide, and terminate in two small horns. This species is distributed from the Sydney region to the Blue Mountains, growing from the coast to nearby ranges on sand or light loam over sandstone, in woodland and heath habitats.
