About Hakea lissocarpha R.Br.
Hakea lissocarpha R.Br. is a dense, spreading lignotuberous shrub with sharp-tipped foliage, typically growing 0.4 to 1.5 metres (1 to 5 ft) tall. It has smooth to somewhat rough grey bark. This species flowers from May to September, producing vertically arranged, sweetly scented flowers that range in color from white-cream to yellow or pink. Flowers grow in racemes, located in leaf axils and on upper branchlets. Its leaves are short, cylindrical, sharply pointed, and divided into many segments. The ovoid fruits are 1.5–2 cm (0.6–0.8 in) long by 1 cm (0.4 in) wide, with a surface that is smooth to somewhat rough and warty, tapering to two short beaks.
This is a variable, common species with a wide distribution, ranging from the coast of Northampton to Israelite Bay. It grows in heath or woodland habitats on sand, loam, lateritic gravel, or limestone. It needs a sunny or semi-shaded position with good drainage. It can be used for hedging and as wildlife habitat, and it is tolerant of both drought and frost.
