About Graptemys barbouri Carr & Marchand, 1942
Sexual Size Dimorphism
Graptemys barbouri, commonly known as Barbour's map turtle, shows a large size difference between adult males and adult females. On average, adult males have a straight-line carapace length of 3.5 to 5.5 inches (8.9 to 14.0 cm).
Female Carapace Size
Adult females are much larger, with straight-line carapace lengths ranging from 6 to 12.5 inches (15 to 32 cm); females reach very large sizes and have significantly enlarged heads.
Vertebral Scute Spines
This species has black-tipped spines on its second, third, and fourth vertebral scutes. These spines are very prominent in males, and resemble a dorsal fin.
Geographic Range
G. barbouri is found in rivers across three locations in the southeastern United States: southeastern Alabama, the western panhandle of Florida, and southwestern Georgia.
Habitat Preference
This turtle prefers deeper river habitats near rocky areas that contain large amounts of woody debris.
