About Gmelina arborea Roxb. ex Sm.

Gmelina arborea Roxb. ex Sm. has several English common names including beechwood, gmelina, goomar teak, Kashmir tree, Malay beechwood, white teak, and yamane; it is locally known as gamhar. It is a fast-growing deciduous tree that belongs to the Lamiaceae family. This species grows naturally across India, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and the southern provinces of China. It occurs at altitudes ranging from sea level up to 1,500 metres (5,000 ft). Since the 1960s, it has been widely introduced as a fast-growing timber tree to Brazil, Gambia, Honduras, Ivory Coast, Malaysia, Malawi, Nigeria, the Philippines, and Sierra Leone. It is also planted in gardens and along avenues.
