About Gleditsia aquatica Marshall
Gleditsia aquatica Marshall commonly reaches a height of 50 to 60 feet. It typically grows in swamps and prefers partial sun. Like other members of the Fabaceae family, it produces a flat legume pod, but these pods usually contain only one seed. Its leaves are usually simple-compounded, and sometimes resemble those of acacia. This species, commonly called water locust, is native to the southern United States, with its main range covering the Southeast from Florida west to eastern Texas and north to Illinois. It can also be found as far north as Ohio, southern New York, and southwestern Connecticut. It is hardy in USDA zones 6 through 9. Natural hybrids occur where the range of G. aquatica overlaps with that of Gleditsia triacanthos.
