About Egretta intermedia plumifera (Gould, 1848)
Etymology and Size Comparison
As its scientific name suggests, the intermediate egret (referenced here as the subspecies Egretta intermedia plumifera) is intermediate in size between the great egret and smaller white egret species like the little egret and cattle egret; its size is closer to that of the little egret than the great egret.
Body Measurements
It measures approximately 56–72 cm (22–28 in) in total length, has a wingspan of 105–115 cm (41–45 in), and weighs around 400 g (14 oz).
Non-breeding Plumage and Features
It has entirely white plumage, generally dark legs, and a fairly thick yellow bill.
Breeding Traits
Breeding individuals may show a reddish or black bill, greenish yellow gape skin, loose filamentous plumes on the breast and back, and dull yellow or pink coloration on the upper legs; these breeding traits vary by region.
Sexual Dimorphism
Male and female intermediate egrets have similar appearance.
