Endemism

The species is endemic to Australia.

State Distribution

D. nobbi is found in the Australian states of New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, and Victoria.

Primary Range Extent

Its range extends predominantly from northern Queensland down along central and eastern regions through to New South Wales, then south and west to north-western Victoria and south-eastern South Australia.

Disjunct Distribution Patches

Small patches of the species have also been identified in the northern end of the Northern Territory.

Core Habitat Types

The preferred natural habitats of D. nobbi are shrubland, savanna, and forest.

Full Ecosystem Range

This lizard, also called the Nobbi Dragon, is distributed across a wide variety of environments and ecosystems in Australia, including rainforests, dry woodlands, coastal swamplands and coastal vegetation, cool temperate forests and uplands, and dry mallee and spinifex woodlands.

Morphological Variation Cause

This wide distribution has contributed to large amounts of variation in morphological characteristics such as size and colouration.

Microhabitat Use

Within these environments, the Nobbi Dragon inhabits the understory layer in dry spinifex grass, as well as tree trunks and hollows, to obtain food and seek shelter.

Taxonomic Summary

The Nobbi Dragon, Diporiphora nobbi, is a lizard species endemic to northern and eastern Australia.

Family Classification

It is part of the family Agamidae, which is commonly known as the dragon family.

Size

The Nobbi Dragon reaches a total length of 20 cm from snout to tail.

Body Colouration and Pattern

Its colouration is primarily made up of brown and black tones, with two distinct stripes running horizontally along its back on either side of the spine, starting at the head and ending at the tip of the tail.

Diagnostic Scale Trait

The species can also be identified by having fewer than 20 dorsal scale rows at the level of the axilla, a trait that distinguishes it from other species in the genus Diporiphora.

Genus Placement

It belongs to the Diporiphora genus, which contains 21 species.

Genus Distinguishing Traits

The genus is distinct from other agamid species due to its climbing ability and particular morphological attributes.

Antipredator Behavior

Nobbi Dragons reside near and within shrubbery on tree trunks, in arid shrublands, savannas, and forests, and they run on their hind legs when threatened.

Reproduction

Like other reptiles, the Nobbi Dragon reproduces sexually, and is oviparous, meaning embryos develop inside eggs laid by the mother.

Diet

The Nobbi Dragon is a carnivore that primarily consumes insects and other small invertebrates.

Feeding Behavior

It hunts by waiting in an ambush position for prey, then lashing out quickly to grab prey with its mouth once it is within striking distance.
