Nomenclature and Classification

The smoky pocket gopher, scientifically named Cratogeomys fumosus, is a rodent species that belongs to the Geomyidae family.

Geographic Distribution

This species is endemic to the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt in Mexico, where it occurs in the states of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacan, Guanajuato, Queretaro, Hidalgo, Estado de Mexico, and the Mexican Federal District.

Habitat

Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical dry lowland grassland.

Phylogenetic Research Findings

Molecular phylogenetic research has shown that Cratogeomys fumosus includes populations that were previously classified as separate species: C. gymnurus, C. neglectus, C. tylorhinus and C. zinseri.

Recognized Subspecies

Four subspecies of Cratogeomys fumosus are currently recognized: C. f. fumosus Merriam, 1892, C. f. angustirostris Merriam, 1903, C. f. imparilis Goldman 1939, and C. f. tylorhinus Merriam, 1895.
