Taxonomy and Common Names
Coradion altivelis, commonly known as the highfin coralfish or highfin butterflyfish, is a species of marine ray-finned butterflyfish that belongs to the family Chaetodontidae.
Distribution Range
This species occurs in the Indo-West Pacific region: its range extends from the Andaman Sea and Sumatra eastward to Papua New Guinea, northward to southern Japan, and southward to northwest Australia and the Great Barrier Reef.
Habitat
It inhabits coastal marine environments, including the seaward side of reefs, drop-offs, and relatively shallow waters with silty substrates.
Diet
C. altivelis is omnivorous, with sponges making up the majority of its diet.
Reproduction
It forms breeding pairs to reproduce.
