Pycnochromis vanderbilti, which is also referenced by the scientific name Chromis vanderbilti (Fowler, 1941), is commonly called Vanderbilt's chromis. It is a species of damselfish that is native to the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.
Etymology of specific name
This species' specific name honors George Washington Vanderbilt III (1914–1961), a yachtsman and explorer.
Type collection context
Vanderbilt organized an expedition to Oahu in 1940, and the type specimen of this species was collected during that expedition.
Naming acknowledgment
When Fowler named this species, he acknowledged Vanderbilt for his contribution to building the fish collection at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia.
