Taxonomy and Common Name

Chromis chrysura, commonly known as the stout chromis, is a diurnal damselfish species that belongs to the genus Chromis. This species has several geographically isolated populations.

Northwest Pacific Population

The first population occurs across Taiwan, the Ryukyu Islands, and southern Japan.

Coral Sea Population

The second is located in the Coral Sea, spanning New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji, and eastern Australia.

Western Indian Ocean Population

The third is found in the western Indian Ocean, covering Mauritius and Réunion.

Additional Range Records

The species is also present in the Philippines, and it may occur in India as well.

Habitat

Chromis chrysura lives on outer coral or rocky reefs.

Grouping and Diet

It typically forms large groups in shallow waters, and feeds on zooplankton.

Reproduction

This species is oviparous; males of the species guard and aerate the eggs.
