About Chatogekko amazonicus (Andersson, 1918)

Common Name and Taxonomic Placement

Chatogekko amazonicus, commonly known as the Brazilian pygmy gecko, is a species of South American lizard that belongs to the family Sphaerodactylidae. It is the only species in the monotypic genus Chatogekko.

Maximum Size

This species reaches a maximum total length of 24 millimetres (0.94 in) when including the tail.

Habitat and Diet

Brazilian pygmy geckos live in leaf litter on the forest floor, and their diet consists of springtails and mites.

Reproduction

The species reproduces by laying eggs, meaning it is oviparous.

Skin Hydrophobicity

The skin of the Brazilian pygmy gecko is extremely hydrophobic. This hydrophobic property lets the small species avoid drowning during rainstorms, and it even allows the gecko to float on water.

Phylogenetic Analysis

A 2011 cladogram from Gamble et al. shows the phylogenetic relationships between sphaerodactyl gecko genera that were recognized as valid at that time.
