Species Introduction
Chalcorana raniceps is a species of relatively small frog.
Adult Size
Adult males measure 28–34 mm (1.1–1.3 in) in snout–vent length, while adult females measure 33–42 mm (1.3–1.7 in).
Dorsal Coloration
Most individuals are green in colour, and some have a brown back.
Head and Limb Features
They have a long, pointed snout, and adhesive disks on their finger and toe tips.
Ventral Thigh Coloration
The undersides of the thighs may be reddish.
Similar Species Comparison
This species resembles Chalcorana megalonesa, but is much smaller in size.
Tadpole Characteristics
Its tadpoles are easily noticeable, with dark markings and red gills against a light brown to yellow background; they are presumed to be poisonous.
Habitat Range
Chalcorana raniceps lives across a wide variety of lowland primary and secondary rainforest habitats.
Breeding Sites
It breeds in ponds, intermittent streams, and quiet side pools of streams.
Male Calling Behavior
Males call in small groups from twigs and vegetation that are 0.5–1.5 m above the ground.
