About Cenchrus longispinus (Hack.) Fernald

Cenchrus longispinus is a grass species that is also commonly called spiny burr grass, gentle Annie, or picco. It is a summer annual grass. Its fruits are grouped into structures called "burrs", which have sharp, barbed spines. These spines can penetrate the hides and mouths of grazing animals, and can also become stuck in human clothing and skin to cause discomfort. This attachment to animals and people is an important part of the plant's seed dispersal process. When there is no competition for light, Cenchrus longispinus grows with a prostrate habit. The species is native to North America. It has been introduced to Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, where it is classified as a noxious weed.
