About Castilleja mendocinensis (Eastw.) Pennell
Castilleja mendocinensis is a spreading, heavily branching perennial herb that reaches up to approximately 60 centimeters in length. The plant is covered in bristles and pale rough hairs, which gives it a gray-green appearance. Its leaves are fleshy, with a rounded or oval shape, and measure no longer than around 2 centimeters. The inflorescence consists of layered lobed bracts; these bracts are greenish at the base and tipped in bright orange-red to red shades. Hairy, tubular flowers emerge from between the bracts; these flowers are greenish or yellowish, and sometimes have red-tinged tips. The fruit produced by this species is a capsule that can grow up to 2 centimeters long.
