Carpobrotus virescens is a prostrate plant with stems that can reach up to 1.5 metres (5 ft) in length. Its green leaves measure 3.5 to 9 centimetres (1½–3½ in) long and 9 to 17 millimetres wide. The flowers are 4 to 6 centimetres in diameter, borne on a pedicel 5 to 15 millimetres long. Each flower contains 250 to 300 stamens, surrounded by petal-like staminodes that are mostly purple, with white coloring at the base.
