Maximum Length
The crowned toby reaches a maximum length of 14 cm.
Dorsal Markings
Three dark brown saddle-shaped markings run along its back.
Etymology of Hawaiian Name
These markings may have reminded Hawaiians of lava flows, which is how the species got its Hawaiian name pu'u olai, meaning "cinder cone".
Body Coloration
Much of the fish's whitish body is covered in yellow dots, and blue and yellow lines radiate out from the fish's eyes.
