Only one species in this genus is currently recognized as valid: Campylostachys cernua, which is endemic to the Cape Province region of South Africa.

Illegitimate Homonym

In 1843, Ernst Meyer used the genus name Campylostachys a second time to describe plants in the family Cyperaceae, creating an illegitimate homonym.

Invalid Name Status

Both this reused genus name and the species name Meyer published under it are invalid and illegitimate, as they were published without accompanying descriptions.

The illegitimate Campylostachys E.Mey. 1843 is now treated as a synonym of Fimbristylis Vahl 1805.
