Taxonomy and Nomenclature
Callosciurus caniceps (Gray, 1842), commonly called the grey-bellied squirrel, is a rodent species that belongs to the squirrel family Sciuridae.
Native Distribution
This species occurs naturally in forests, plantations, and gardens across Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, southern Myanmar, and southern China’s Yunnan province, and it may also be present in western Laos.
Introduced Range
It has been intentionally introduced to the Ryukyu Islands of Japan.
Ventral Coloration
As its common name implies, the belly of this squirrel is typically grey, though it sometimes has a reddish tint along the sides.
Dorsal Coloration
The color of its upperparts ranges between grey, yellowish-olive, and reddish, and this variation depends on the subspecies and the season.
