Callicarpa japonica Thunb., commonly called East Asian beautyberry or Japanese beautyberry, is a deciduous shrub that belongs to the mint family. It is most well known for growing purple drupes, referred to as its "berries", during the fall. Its flowers can range in color from pink to white. This species is native to China, Japan, Korea, the Ryukyu Islands, and Taiwan, and it is classified as a common species within Japan. It is grown as an ornamental shrub and is very popular for use in gardens and parks. The fruits are not edible for humans, but they are eaten by birds and deer. The leaves of this plant can be used to make herbal tea.
