About Bupleurum fruticosum L.
Bupleurum fruticosum L. is an evergreen shrub that reaches a maximum height of 2 metres (6.6 ft). It has simple, obovate blue-green leaves, and produces clusters of very small yellow flowers. It flowers from June through September, and its seeds ripen from August through October. Its flowers are hermaphrodite, containing both male and female organs, and are pollinated by wasps. The plant is self-fertile, and it is known to attract wildlife. It can grow in any well-drained soil, and prefers a warm, sheltered location with full sun. It can be propagated by seed sown in containers placed in a cold frame in spring, and semi-ripe cuttings can also be rooted in summer. This species grows slowly, but makes an excellent wind-shelter hedge in exposed maritime areas. When planted roughly 1.2 metres (3.9 ft) apart in both directions, it can also be used as tall ground cover.
