About Bredia hirsuta Blume

Type: Japan. K. Ito s. n. (lectotype, designated here: L! [L 0170980]). In the protologue, Blume (1849) did not cite any specimen but mentioned the name "Rhexia fasikan" (which should be Rhexia hasikan, as explained below) attached to a specimen from Von Siebold's herbarium. Ohba and Akiyama (personal communication) found one sheet with the name "Rhexia hasikan" in the herbarium in Leiden (L 0170980). This sheet has two collections: a smaller one covered by paper on the upper part and a larger one with four branches in the middle and lower part. According to Ohba (personal communication), the epithet "hasikan" is derived from the Japanese name of B. hirsuta, which is "Hashikan - boku". This sheet is considered the type material of B. hirsuta. We hereby designate the larger collection on the sheet as the lectotype of B. hirsuta.
