Bodianus scrofa, commonly known as the barred hogfish, is a species of wrasse.
Geographical Distribution
It is native to the eastern Atlantic Ocean, and occurs around the Macaronesian island groups of the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands, and Cape Verde.
Habitat and Depth Range
This species lives on rocky reefs at depths ranging from 20 meters to 200 meters, or 66 to 656 feet.
Size
It can grow to a maximum total length of 43 centimeters (17 inches), though most individuals do not exceed 30 centimeters (12 inches) in length.
Fisheries Relevance
It holds only minor importance for local commercial fisheries.
Taxonomic History
This species was first formally described in 1839 by Achille Valenciennes under the name Labrus scrofa, with its type locality given as the Cape Verde Islands.
