Astragalus crotalariae (Benth.) A.Gray is a bushy perennial herb that grows between 15 and 60 centimeters tall. The whole plant is coarsely hairy and produces an unpleasant scent. Its leaves can reach up to 16 centimeters in length, and each leaf is composed of several pairs of thick, oval to rounded leaflets. The open inflorescence holds up to 25 reddish purple flowers, each measuring 2 to 3 centimeters long. The fruit is an inflated legume pod that grows up to 3 centimeters long. This pod is usually coarsely hairy, and dries to a thick papery texture.
