Distribution

This perennial plant grows in eastern North America, ranging from Hudson Bay south to Indiana, and from Minnesota east to Newfoundland.

Habitat and flowering period

It prefers dry, sandy soil, and blooms between June and July each year.

Rhizome and stem characteristics

Its rhizome can survive winter with stems growing up to 50 centimetres (20 in) above ground.

Leaf structure

It produces ovate to bipinnately compound leaves that hold 10 centimetre (3.9 in) long, serrated leaflets.

Leaflet characteristics

Leaflets range in shape from ovate to shield-shaped, and attach to short petioles.

Fruit characteristics
