This species is native to southern Asia, ranging from Pakistan and India through Malaysia to Indonesia.

Introduced and Regional Sightings

It has also been found in two hot springs in Singapore, and is commonly seen in rivers and estuaries around Johor Bahru.

The species can be identified by a white spot on its head.

Size and Behavioral Traits

It can grow up to 9 cm (3.5 in) in length, usually stays near the water surface, and controls mosquito populations by feeding on mosquito larvae.
