Aplocheilus lineatus (Valenciennes, 1846)

Taxonomic Classification

The striped panchax, scientifically named Aplocheilus lineatus, is a killifish species that belongs to the genus Aplocheilus. There is an aquarium-bred variant of this species with more yellowish coloration that is commonly called the golden wonder killifish.

Distribution and Habitat

Striped panchax live in both fresh and brackish waters in India and Sri Lanka, where they can be found in streams, rivers, swamps, and paddy fields.

Diet

In their natural habitat, they feed on insects, crustaceans, and even small fish.

Size

This species reaches a maximum total length of 10 cm (4 inches). Most mature male Aplocheilus lineatus grow to around 7 centimetres (3 inches), but the fish can reach up to 10 centimetres (4 inches) when kept in excellent conditions, particularly if they live out their full life expectancy of around six years.

Sensory Adaptation

Aplocheilus lineatus has a parietal eye, which allows it to detect prey insects and predators that are above it at the water surface.

Locomotion Trait

This fish is also a very capable jumper.
