About Anemone sylvestris L.
Anemone sylvestris L. (also referenced as Anemonoides sylvestris) grows 0.30–0.46 m (1–1.5 feet) tall, and produces fragrant white flowers that bloom in April. Each flower has five petals, with yellow anthers at its center. This species is widespread in Central Europe, where it grows mainly in colline to submontane zones; further east, it is found increasingly in lowland areas. Its overall distribution stretches from France and Central Europe, across the Balkans and Asia Minor, to the Caucasus. From Eastern Europe, the species extends through southern Siberia to Mongolia and northern China. It grows best in moist, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter, and prefers partial shade, though it can tolerate full sun in cooler climates. It grows starting at sunny woodland edges, and also spreads into adjacent grasslands, where it colonizes dry, nitrogen-poor, deep soils in locations ranging from sunny to lightly shaded. One known cultivar is Anemonoides sylvestris 'Madonna'.
