Species Nomenclature

The blue-spotted wrasse, scientifically named Anampses caeruleopunctatus, is a species of wrasse.

Geographic Distribution

Its distribution ranges from the Atlantic coast of South Africa, through the Indian Ocean, to Japan and Australia, and extends eastward to Easter Island in the Pacific Ocean; it is not found in Hawaii.

Depth Range

This species occurs at depths between 3 metres (9.8 feet) and 30 metres (98.4 feet).

Adult Habitat

Adult blue-spotted wrasses prefer the surge zone of coral reefs or along rocky coastlines.

Juvenile Behavior

Juveniles of this species orient their bodies and move in a pattern that mimics floating leaves.

Maximum Size

This species can grow to a total length of 42 centimetres (17 inches).

Human Relevance

It holds minor importance for local commercial fisheries, and is also available in the aquarium trade.
