About Alocasia longiloba Miq.
Alocasia longiloba Miq. is a species of flowering plant in the Araceae family. It serves as the namesake of its own species complex. This species complex has a widespread distribution, covering Guangdong, Hainan, and southern Yunnan in China, mainland Southeast Asia, as well as western and central Malesia. In the commercial houseplant trade, many former species that have been merged into Alocasia longiloba are now treated as types or varieties of the species; these include 'argyrea', 'korthalsii', 'lowii', and 'watsoniana'. The placement and taxonomic validity of these varieties, as well as any potential hybrids and cultivars within the species complex, are not clear. This uncertainty extends to the cultivars 'Jackrabbit' and 'Thibautians'. A cross between Alocasia lowii and the kris plant Alocasia sanderiana produced Alocasia × mortfontanensis. This hybrid may or may not be the same entity as the well-known hybrid Alocasia × amazonica (the African mask), which is formed by crossing A. sanderiana and Alocasia watsoniana. The only parent that can be confirmed for both hybrids is A. sanderiana.
