This is a tropical marine species native to the western Indian Ocean.
Specific Distribution Locations
Its distribution ranges from Kenya to KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, and it can also be found at Aldabra, Madagascar, Mauritius, and Réunion.
Adult Habitat
Adult members of the species usually live on rocky reefs that are rich in coral, exposed to moderate wave action, between 0 and 6 metres (0 to 20 feet) deep.
Juvenile Habitat
Juveniles of the species are typically found in lagoons and other flat shallow habitats.

This fish usually occurs alone or in loose groups.

While its diet is primarily made up of algae, it also consumes crustaceans and other invertebrates.
