About Abudefduf concolor (Gill, 1862)
Nomenclature and Taxonomy
Abudefduf concolor, first formally described by Gill in 1862, is commonly called the dusky sergeant or night sergeant. It is a species of damselfish belonging to the family Pomacentridae, and it is endemic to the eastern Pacific Ocean.
Maximum Size
This species reaches a maximum total length of 19 centimeters (7.5 inches).
Geographic Range
Its geographic range in the Eastern Pacific extends from El Salvador south to Peru, and it also occurs around the Galapagos Islands, Cocos Island, and Malpelo Island.
Habitat and Depth
It is a marine species that lives in shallow reef habitats, most commonly on rocky inshore reefs, at depths no greater than 5 meters (16 feet).
Feeding and Reproductive Mode
It is an omnivorous, oviparous fish.
Breeding Behavior
During breeding season, individuals form mating pairs, and males guard and aerate the fertilized eggs.
