Zyxomma petiolatum Rambur, 1842 is a medium-sized chocolate-brown dragonfly with emerald-green eyes. Females of this species look similar to males. This dragonfly breeds in small pools, ponds, swamps, and slow-flowing rivers. It is primarily crepuscular, but can also be active on overcast days. It is most often seen in the evening, when it flies extremely quickly at low heights over bodies of water, hunting and feeding on midges and mosquitoes. During the daytime, it roosts among vegetation and can be difficult to locate.
