About Zygoballus rufipes G.W.Peckham & E.G.Peckham, 1885
Zygoballus rufipes, commonly known as the hammerjawed jumper, is a species of jumping spider found in the United States, Canada, and Central America. Adult females of the species have a body length ranging from 4.3 to 6 millimeters, while adult males have a body length between 3 and 4 millimeters. Confirmed reports of Zygoballus rufipes come from Canada, the United States, Mexico, Guatemala, and Costa Rica. In 1929, entomologist Nathan Banks reported a female specimen of the species from Panama. However, in 1946 arachnologist Arthur M. Chickering determined that Banks' specimen actually belonged to Zygoballus optatus, a newly described species at that time. Chickering did not find any specimens of Z. rufipes in Panama after several years of collecting in the area. A one-year survey of Panamanian spiders led by zoologist Wolfgang Nentwig also did not find any Z. rufipes specimens.
