Taxonomy and Naming
Zonosaurus madagascariensis, described by Gray in 1831, is a species of lizard commonly known as the Madagascar girdled lizard or Madagascar plated lizard, and it belongs to the family Gerrhosauridae.
Distribution
This species is found in Madagascar, several outlying islands including Nosy Be and its nearby islands, Grande Glorieuse, and Cosmoledo in the Seychelles.
Population Status and Habitat Range
It is generally a common species, and occurs in a variety of habitat types.
Forest and Plantation Habitat
These include open and degraded humid forest at mid and low altitudes, as well as plantations.
Cosmoledo Island Habitat
On the island of Cosmoledo, it lives in open shrubland.
Reproduction and Size
This lizard is oviparous, and reaches a maximum total length of 30 cm (12 in).
