About Zintha hintza (Trimen, 1864)

Zintha hintza, first formally described by Trimen in 1864, is a species of butterfly. Males of this species have a wingspan ranging from 24 to 28 mm, while females have a slightly smaller wingspan of 24 to 27 mm. Adult Zintha hintza butterflies are active and in flight from September through April. This species is found across tropical eastern and southern Africa. Three subspecies of Zintha hintza are currently recognized. The nominate subspecies is Zintha hintza hintza (Trimen, 1864), which ranges from South Africa to Kenya, and may also occur in Zaire. Zintha hintza krooni, described by Dickson in 1973, is found in Namibia and the areas adjacent to Namibia. Zintha hintza resplendens, first described by Butler in 1876, occurs in Ethiopia and the areas adjacent to Ethiopia. The larvae of Zintha hintza feed on plants from the genus Ziziphus; documented host plants include Ziziphus zeyheriana and Ziziphus mucronata.
